If you were in a game store that only had two games left. and they were Doom 3 and Half-life 2. and all you had was enough money to pay for one game. and you couldn't go to the bank to get money because someone would take them. and you didn't want to wait for a restock. which one would you get?

Response: Both Adam and Morgan agreed that Halo II. Yeah, Halo II.

2004.06.23 Retro Episode #221 (Jet Li...)

Article originally posted on 2004.02.25 "That's All Folks!"

Guess what, it's a retro episode.

Here's something I want to field to you all with broadband access -- working from a suggestion offered in a comment for a previous episode -- would it be worth something to offer you guys special access to a ftp site with your own personal username/password so that you can download a day's worth of screen captures. In case you haven't noticed, I'm planning on taking a episode's worth of screen captures.

Now, I might be able to set up something where you can personally download each day's worth in a zip file format. My question to you is ... what is it worth to you to have this type of service? Check out this week's poll.

In the meantime, here's today's retro episode screen captures.

2004.06.21 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Sneak

So ... why is MGS 3 going back in the past? Shouldn't the game be called MGS Prime Zero... where it all began *smile*. It's confusing that MGS 3 is really before the MGS series began or something like that and not really after MGS 2.

2004.06.15 X-Play's "Can't Hardly Wait" Episode

Original articles:

Speaking of Jennifer Love Hewitt in Can't Hardly Wait -- I've not seen her new movie, Garfield. I wonder if it's any good? How was Jennifer?

Because the new games featured at E3 2004 aren't available yet, here are some of the titles that you should play while you wait.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow XBox 5 out of 5 stars
Battlefield: Vietnam PC 4 out of 5 stars
Final Fantasy XI Online PS2 4 out of 5 stars
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes GCN 4 out of 5 stars
From: Big Kid 557
I was watching Best of E3 2004 and I was wondering if the Nintendo DS will have the same format for game cartridges as the GBA SP.

Response: Yes, the unit will be backwards compatible.

Okay, get ready for the grand daddy of all screenshot collections in a day's episode, 79 pics.

2004.06.14 Playing Catch Up...

Sorry everyone, had to clean the house -- set my new rack so that my computers can all be in one location -- so I do disconnect everything, rewire all the back wires and reconnect. The server came up, the clients came up ... and then I cleaned the office in time for a party that was planned by my wife and I on Saturday.

So, here I am...

Didn't see any X-Play on Friday but there was a retro double header on Saturday, including the 'sit back and relax' episode.

Well, here are the games that Morgan and Adam reviewed for tonight's episode:

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$ GCN 3 out of 5 stars
Unreal II: The Awakening XBox 3 out of 5 stars
Breed PC 2 out of 5 stars
Transformers PS2 4 out of 5 stars

I only got to play the DEMO version of transformers... not bad :)

From: The Cellar Dweller
Just wanted to let you know how excited I was to see Legacy of Kane listed as one of your sleeper hits the other week. I've got all the dialog from the series dubbed to tape so I can listen to it when I am driving to work, usually at full volume with all my windows down. I get some really odd looks when Vorodor exclaims "hahaha call your dogs, they can feast on your corpses!" Priceless.

No. I don't have a girlfriend.

I tried taking a screen capture of Morgan Webb's foot from the episode, didn't look too good. So, how about some retro screen captures?

2004.06.08 Go! Speed Racer, Go!

Despite the lack of a better than average rating, I have to say that the graphics on the games are getting much better (like no, duh!). I know, but hear me out. Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 are great games ... when they come out ... and let's not forget to mention Doom 3, but look at Desert Rats vs. Afrika Korps, the detail on the vehicles, on the action... are very life-like, not animated or cartoonish.

We've come a long way since Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Xenophobe.

Desert Rats vs. Afrika Korps PC 3 out of 5 stars
TOCA Race Driver2: The Ultimate Race Driving SimulatorTOCA Race Driver 2: The Ultimate Race Driving Simulartor XBOX 4 out of 5 stars

I'm still waiting for the next generation of Resident Evil where you are IN the virtual world. Resident Evil 4's main selling point is that the zombies are no longer walking idiots, they will eventually get to you if you stand still long enough.

2004.06.07 Back from Retro Week...

Well, it seems like X-Play is back from 'Retro' (rather silly name to call a 'repeat') week and I've got a treat for you all. I took a lot of screen captures from Morgan Webb's appearance on the Screen Savers.

I ask you, 'why couldn't she have appeared on the Screen Savers when I was sitting on a live taping of the show back in the last week of May?' I guess I shouldn't complain -- I got to meet Sarah Lane.

As this episode is a laid back episode, there were no review of any new games, but we got to re-preview many of the games they previewed at the E3 convention.

Anyways, on to the screen captures. Oh don't worry about bandwidth, I'm currently averaging about 1.7GB of data transfer with a total of about 12GB transferred so far for the month of June. The month of May, we totalled 54.75GB of data transferred but only accumulating 38K visitors (1,558,961 hits).

Here are some from The Screen Savers

And now from X-Play...

2004.06.02 Steel Battalion: Line of Contact (revisited)

Morgan: I got it today.
Adam: Oh, your buttons are blue. 2nd edition! Loser!
Steel Battalion: Line of Contact Steel Battalion: Line of Contact
Morgan: I don't know. I think "green buttons are so predictable." I mean, you look at a giant robot... and you're like...
Steel Battalion: Line of Contact Steel Battalion: Line of Contact
(Morgan): Yeah! Green buttons in there. No doubt! Morgan: But... blue buttons, blue is unexpected.
Steel Battalion: Line of Contact Steel Battalion: Line of Contact
(Morgan): Blue is a shade you don't expect when you climb into a giant robot. Morgan: It's unique and <something>.

Adam: Change places.
Morgan: Why would I wanna...
Adam: Change places, NOW!

2004.06.01 Geeks and Morgan Webb

Syphon Filter: Chris Leary?Okay, maybe it's because I miss watching Tech Live since G4 took over TechTV and removed the show from its line up, but doesn't Gabe Logan from Syphon Filter look like Chris Leary from TechTv TechLive?

You know, one thing I really enjoyed about watching TechTV, it's not just for geeks -- I mean, it was a little for everyone and you can't label the viewers are geeks/nerds/gamers -- but now with G4 generally holding on to shows only for gamers, I guess it's really now for geeks and nerds, isolating them from the rest of society.

I mean before, you had shows like Call for Help in which you had mothers and fathers calling in for help. This means that they actually watched the station -- heh heh, if you watched the show, you know those calling in aren't on top of the computer geek-chain. You also had shows like Tech Live which talks about other areas of technology. There was a mixture in programming and this programming brought viewers from all different demographic areas. But now, those shows are gone and all that you're left are shows like Cheat (provide you with game exclusives and the ways to beat them), the Electric Playground (show that goes on location and behind the scenes of the videogame industry) and Cinematech (Complementing the gameplay of many high-end games is an extraordinary assortment of intro-games, cinematics and trailers), just to name a few.

Sure they kept Unscrewed to entice those to the dark side.

From "About G4TechTV:"
G4techTV is a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week television network dedicated to creating a lifestyle brand that is the source of entertainment, news and information about the interactive entertainment industry, including video, computer, online and wireless games, for young adults (18-34) and teens (12-17).

So, where does Future Fighting Machines fall in the 'entertainment industry, including video, computer, online and wireless games'? What about Body Hits?

Anyways, tonight's episode reviewed three new games:

Steel Battalion: Line of ContactSteel Battalion: Line of Contact Xbox 2 out of 5 stars
Bomberman JettersBomberman Jetters GCN 2 out of 5 stars
Syphon Filter: The Omega StrainSyphon Filter: The Omega Strain PS2 4 out of 5 stars

I liked the original Syphon Filter series on the PS One (before the PS2 ever made it to market) and I've spent many hours playing the game. Personally, I don't think I'll be buying this game for the online component only because I'm already online doing stuff for this website and many other websites that I maintain and operate. I want to play a game now, that I can simply rev up, load and start playing. I don't want to wait for players and suffer the possible 'connection lost' errors.

Steel Battalion: Line of Contact -- all I can say is $300.00 for the whole controller/game unit? No thanks, but the control system does look nice.
